 Project Scope:

The Project scope was the rehabilitation of Chai Valley in the aftermath of devastating 2010 floods in Pakistan. Chail Valley which lies in remote areas of upper Swat inhabited by about 30,000 populations in 44 villages was most affected by the flood, damaging their livelihoods assets houses and infrastructure of already poor population in the area. Specific Objectives of the project were to meet the short-term food security and other needs through Cash for Work and to ensure long-term food security through protection of livelihoods assets (agricultural land, water resources and forests/ agro-forests, houses etc.)

The main focus of the project was on upstream stabilization to reduce flash flood damages; through

  •  Social mobilization/ capacity building in community based DRR measures
  • Introduction of structural engineering measures (check dams, slope stabilization protection walls, plantation of multi-purpose trees. 

Services:

  • Mobilized more than 25,000 communities (30% female)
  • Constructed about 16,00 check dams and 145 retaining walls (measuring more than 5000 cft)

  • Trained about 50 skilled workers on the job in masonry work and plantation.
  • Six main revenue villages are trained in CBDRM and tool kits provided
  • More than 150,000 plantation of walnuts, persimmon and forest plantations conducted through community plus direct seed sowing of these in vulnerable spots.
  • Awareness raising session covering all the villages including training of school teachers and students.
